Another tool

Portion Control - Portion control is a new concept for this dieter. I am finding when comparing notes with other people who are trying to lose weight, or at least change their eating habits, portion control is crucial. There is much talk about the increase in serving sizes in restaurants, especially fast food restaurants. How many times have you been asked, "May I biggie size that for you?" Successful long-term weight loss includes the practice of portion control. One clever way to be mindful of your portion size and to control it more easily would be to use a smaller dinner plate. Try using a 9" instead of an 11" plate. This is particularly helpful for those of us who grew up being "clean-platers".

You may notice that many of our tools this week begin with the letter "P". Perhaps you will find this a helpful tip when attempting to remember these tools.
  • P Pray and ask God for help as you surrender unhealthy eating habits to Him daily
  • P Plan your menu for the day or the week.
  • P Partner with someone for support and accountability
  • P Practice Portion control
Thanks for traveling with me down this path to a healthier lifestyle. I look forward to where God will lead our conversation next week. May God bless you today and everyday.

  1. Judy! This is incredible. I am sure you can tell by looking at me that I struggle here too! :) Thank you for doing this. I will make a point to check your blog regularly. Portion control is a big one for me, but so is exercise. I have recently determined to run the race for the cure in May. (My (favorite) aunt just died (only 46!) from breast cancer and I am allowing her to motivate me to get healthier. I have used my kids as an excuse to not exercise, but we are finding ways... :) Motivation is a big key I think with a lot of dieters. I had to find a motivation that worked for me. Maybe that would be a good topic of discussion. For some, it's feeling better or looking better. For some it is the thought of a new wardrobe. Those things didn't do it for me, but my aunt... she has motivated me.
Sorry for being so long winded! :) Take care!

  2. Emily - great comments and I love the idea of asking about just what motivates us. I will address this come Monday morning. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  3. Portion control plays one of the major parts of my losing weight. Conversation while eating frequently distracts me. At some point I realize that I am eating more than I need so I stop. I have also realized that if I want to eat something out of line, frequently one small bite gets me over it. I don't have to eat the whole thing. Sometimes I don't even take a bite . I think knowing that I can have it if I want it takes away the battle within. Every day is a new day to pay attention to what I am doing. (eating)
